The Splash: hét interactieve ‘openluchtzwembad’ van Rotterdam Zuid is geopend!
[For English, see below] WAT?! Een buitenbad? In Hart van Zuid op het Annie M.G. Schmidtplein in Rotterdam is nét voor aanvang van het Eurovisie Songfestival een toegepast kunstwerk gelanceerd in de vorm van… een zwembad. Geen echte natuurlijk, maar een artistieke interpretatie die dient als interactieve ontmoetingsplek voor Rotterdammers en bezoekers. The Splash, een samenwerking tussen Arttenders en kunstenaar Cindy Bakker, is geïnspireerd op de natuurlijke aantrekkingskracht van pierenbaden. Het is een plek waar functionaliteit, kunst, ruimtelijke ontwikkeling en beleidsoplossingen samenkomen middels social design. Het werk wordt ‘officieel’ in gebruik genomen vanaf 28 april, maar is nu al te bewonderen!
Het smaakmakende ontwerp van The Splash is de eerste in een serie ontwerpen in de openbare ruimte getiteld ‘The Shape of Rotterdam’. Het idee van de Shape of Rotterdam komt voort uit de kans die Rotterdam. Make it Happen en Arttenders signaleerden om citymarketing in te zetten om lokale identiteit en belangen een grotere rol te laten spelen in gebiedsontwikkeling. Arttenders deed hiervoor in opdracht van Gemeente Rotterdam uitgebreid onderzoek naar hoe welzijn, sport, vergroening, klimaatadaptatie, gebiedsontwikkeling en lokale behoeften van bewoners en ondernemers samen kunnen komen in een functionele én iconische plek in de buitenruimte.
Het Annie M.G. Schmidtplein op Rotterdam Zuid werd uitgekozen als locatie en heeft met The Splash de primeur als eerste ‘Shape of Rotterdam’. De lancering vindt plaats vlak voor het Eurovisie Songfestival als onderdeel van de officiële Citydressing van het evenement. The Splash is daarmee niet alleen een visitekaartje tijdens het evenement, maar onderdeel van de nalatenschap voor de stad Rotterdam. “Dankzij Host City Rotterdam is The Shape in een stroomversnelling gekomen. Zuidplein heeft nu een icoon wat ook nog na het Songfestival antwoord geeft op een praktische wens uit de buurt,” aldus Siobhan Burger van Arttenders.
Voor en met de stad
“Het doel van The Shape of Rotterdam is aantrekkelijke plekken in de buitenruimte ontwikkelen waar iedereen zich welkom en gehoord voelt, maar die ook grotere uitdagingen aanpakken.” zegt Burger. Omliggende ondernemers, buurtbewoners, Hart van Zuid, Gemeente Rotterdam en landschapsarchitect Karres en Brands zijn daarom actief betrokken in het ontwerpproces. De Rotterdamse kunstenaar Cindy Bakker zond haar portfolio in voor de Call for Interest en werd als lokale kunstenaar geselecteerd door een vak- en publieksjury. Samen met Arttenders creëerde zij ‘The Splash’.
The Splash is een zintuigprikkelende ervaring, geïnspireerd op de pierenbadjes uit de jaren ‘60 met een knipoog naar het huidige spiksplinternieuwe zwembad op Zuid. Het multifunctioneel inzetbare ontwerp biedt ruimte voor ontmoeting en is gemaakt als plek voor jong en oud.
Cindy Bakker: “The Splash is ontworpen om ‘toegeëigend’ te worden door de buurt. Al tijdens de plaatsing zagen we dat mensen een praatje met elkaar aanknopen op de zitelementen, dat kinderen over de vlakken skateboarden en dat zelfs de allerkleinsten over de duikplank klimmen en klauteren. Het werkt, hoe gaaf is dat!”

The Splash: the interactive ‘outdoor pool’ of Rotterdam Zuid is open!
WHAT?! An outdoor pool? In Hart van Zuid, at the Annie M.G. Schmidt square in Rotterdam, a functional artwork has been launched in the shape of… a swimming pool – just before the start of the Eurovision Song Contest. Not a real one of course, but an artistic interpretation that serves as an interactive meeting place for the inhabitants of Rotterdam and visitors. The Splash, a collaboration between Arttenders and artist Cindy Bakker, is inspired by the natural appeal of paddling pools. It is a place where functionality, art, spatial development, and policy solutions come together through social design. The work is ‘officially’ put into use from April 28 on, but can already be admired!
The striking design of The Splash is the first in a series of designs placed in public space, entitled ‘The Shape of Rotterdam’. The concept behind The Shape of Rotterdam is the result of an opportunity spotted by Rotterdam. Make it Happen and Arttenders to employ citymarketing to enhance the role of local identity and needs in public development. Arttenders was commissioned by the Municipality of Rotterdam to perform an extensive research on how welfare, sport, greening, climate adaptation, area development and local needs of residents and entrepreneurs can be combined within a functional and iconic design in the public space.
The Annie M.G. Schmidt square in Rotterdam Zuid was picked and is the first to have a ‘Shape of Rotterdam’ with The Splash. The launch will take place just before the Eurovision Song Contest as part of the official city dressing for the event. The Splash will, therefore, not only function as a calling card during the event but will also be part of the long term legacy of Rotterdam. “Thanks to Host City Rotterdam, The Shape has gained momentum. Zuidplein now has an icon which, even after the Eurovision Song Contest, provides an answer to a practical wish from the neighbourhood,” says Siobhan Burger of Arttenders.
For and with the city
“The Shape of Rotterdam aims to develop attractive places in the public space where everyone feels welcome and heard, but which also address bigger challenges.” says Burger. Surrounding entrepreneurs, residents, Hart van Zuid, Rotterdam City Council and landscape architect Karres en Brands were, therefore, actively involved in the design process. Rotterdam artist Cindy Bakker submitted her portfolio for the Call for Interest. She was selected as the local artist for this project by a professional and public jury. Together with Arttenders, she created ‘The Splash’.
The Splash is a sensory experience, inspired by the paddling pools of the 1960s with a nod to the brand-new swimming pool in Zuid. The multifunctional design provides a space for encounters; a place where both younger and older generations can come together.
Cindy Bakker: “The Splash is designed to be ‘appropriated’ by the neighbourhood. Already during the installation we saw that people chat with each other on the seating elements, that children skateboard over the surfaces and that even the little ones climb and scramble over the diving board. It works, how cool is that!”
