Turntable
an interactive beacon for Rotteram Ahoy

In honor of Rotterdam Ahoy's 50th anniversary, Arttenders and Jonas Vorwerk created Turntable: a musical gift to the city. The interactive installation is a brand-new beacon for Ahoy that serves as a gathering point during events, but also has a natural appeal outside of these that invites physical interaction. Turntable, inspired by a traditional record player, is a moving auditory installation that is driven by its audience in a playful and intuitive way.

Vibrant Hart van Zuid

Hart van Zuid is working hard on a vibrant city center for Rotterdam Zuid; an attractive place to be for residents, passers-by and visitors from home and abroad. The area development around the Zuidplein public transport hub - with an inviting outdoor space, brand new swimming pool and versatile arts building - contributes to the quality of life in the district.

Ahoy-square will also be completely redesigned. Rotterdam Ahoy, for example, has already been expanded with a convention center and RTM stage and the square will get a cinema, hotel and various catering facilities. In short, a multifunctional place full of entertainment and recreational opportunities for all ages, which rightly makes Hart van Zuid the new hotspot of Rotterdam.

OUR SQUARE WILL SOON HAVE A DIFFERENT, MORE INTIMATE ATMOSPHERE WITH THE ARRIVAL OF A HOTEL AND CINEMA. FOR NOW, WE ARE ALREADY MAKING A HEARTFELT GESTURE TO VISITORS AND LOCAL RESIDENTS WITH THIS WORK OF ART. EVERYONE IS WELCOME WITH US AND IN THE BIG AND SMALL THINGS WE TRY TO GIVE VISITORS BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCES AND LASTING MEMORIES.

Spot on Ahoy-square

Above all, the Ahoy-square remains an event location. Rotterdam Ahoy has asked Arttenders to design a striking beacon for this square for its 50th anniversary. An eye-catching showcase that serves as a recognizable meeting place for visitors. In close collaboration with Rotterdam Ahoy, Arttenders has explored the opportunities outside the existing frameworks in order to get the most out of the request. For example, the design request was formulated more concretely [design, spatial, technical and practical specifications] and an interactive layer was added to the assignment.

Artistic collab

For the artistic touch in our design team, Arttenders has drawn up a list of various suitable artists; each with a distinctive artistic signature. Rotterdam Ahoy has expressed its preference for two artists: Jonas Vorwerk and Tim Boin (Sober Industries). Subsequently, two concept teams were put together, consisting of a collaboration between Arttenders and an artist. Both concept teams have formulated an answer to the same issue in a different, creative way through ‘research through design’. The architectural firm behind Rotterdam Ahoy's annex, Kraaienvanger Architecten, was involved in the decision of the final design. In this way it could be guaranteed that the design matched its environment. Rotterdam Ahoy and David Hess of Kraaienvanger Architecten jointly picked their favorite design.

Social Design Meets Art

Turntable is an installation by Arttenders and Jonas Vorwerk that invites visitors in a playful, intuitive and accessible way to make the installation come to life – as is characteristic of Jonas' oeuvre.

Turntable is the eye-catcher of the Ahoy-square; characteristic as a meeting place for visitors to the Ahoy event location. When it is lit up in the evening, the Hart van Zuid literally and figuratively puts it on the map.

The audience soon notices that Turntable is not a static object, but an experience of size. The artwork stimulates the senses and invites interaction. The luminous turntable can be operated by the public like an oversized record player and starts a musical journey. An eccentric, urban stage that connects with its surroundings; the audience is her musician.

Rotterdam Ahoy has been an icon for Rotterdam Zuid for 50 years. The it-location for music and sports and other memorable events. Turntable translates this iconic value to the outdoor space and unlocks the experience of custom-made audio, entertainment and interpersonal interaction into a playful object by Arttenders and Jonas Vorwerk.

Technology + Playground

Image

Turntable is a moving auditory installation that is driven in a playful, intuitive way. Inspired by the traditional ‘Hollandse Schijf ’and the traditional record player, Turntable plays audio and lights up as soon as the disc is set in motion. The movement is created by walking on it. Thanks to smart sensor and software techniques, the audio accelerates as the disc moves faster. When it stops, the audio also stops. Can you imagine what happens when the disc spins in the opposite direction? Fun guaranteed!

The playful nature of the design makes it a playground and work of art in one. In the technical development not only technology and aesthetics were taken into account, but also that it had to meet all regulations in the field of playing safety. Together with the team of technical experts, the concept was developed into a spectacular final design.

The construction took place in secret, in order to festively reveal Rotterdam Ahoy’s gift. Arttenders took care of the entire realization of A-Z and thus unburdened its client until the moment of launch.

Meet me there!

Turntable is a typical case of social design, where design is done with society in mind. Not art for art's, but art with a human touch. Turntable is a work of art that straddles the border between playground equipment, interactive installation and landmark. Finally, a work of art that you can touch, both for young and old. When will you stop by for some outdoor spinning and scratching?!
